Ragged Edge Recruitment are excited to be working with a local and established client to recruit a Customs Agency Manager to manage all HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) requirements relating to the import and export of cargo through the business operation, ensuring a fast & error free clearance service to all stakeholders & customers.  To lead the department through all Brexit related changes and be integral to the development of all Brexit requirements.

This role is an integral part of the business service offer, as cargo cannot leave the premises until the appropriate HMRC clearance procedures have been finalised, including the payments of duty & VAT where applicable.


  • Import and Export clearances for all internal agency customers
  • Prepare and advise the management in all Customs Clearance aspects relevant to Brexit
  • Serving external customers with a variety of customs activities
  • To keep all stakeholders informed of progress against expected timescales in order to facilitate the communication, planning and coordination of internal and external resources
  • To manage the credit control, payment and reconciliation of all HMRC duty paid & VAT for and on behalf of owners/receivers, ensuring all dues are invoiced and claimed as required
  • To proactively identify opportunities for the generation of additional income, driving sales and increasing revenue
  • Supervising a team and delegate as appropriate – developing the team and enhancing skill sets to enable delegation
  • Guide the business through AEO - (Authorised Economic Operator) accreditation
  • Ensure all necessary Custom Clearance processes post Brexit are implemented accurately and on time
  • Lead the Customs Clearance Department post Brexit
  • Ensuring all invoicing and cost postings are completed within set & agreed time lines
  • Develop, train and motivate staff within own area of accountability ensuring that company policy, procedure & post Brexit instructions are implemented consistently and that all resources are utilized cost effectively
  • Communicate with all parties involved ensuring up to date information and status of cargo clearance is available as and when required
  • Manage the payment of HMRC levies on behalf of the client, via the chosen method
  • By effectively managing people and other resources within company policy and procedure to ensure that cost effective and timely management processes are consistently and fairly applied
  • Agree specific objectives and activities to deliver project goals
  • Be available outside office hours for urgent calls and assist in the solving of problems during this time


  • At least GCSE (O’Level) standard including minimum grade C in Mathematics & English Language


  • Shipping industry experience - minimum 2 years
  • Customs experience - minimum 2 years
  • Line management experience - minimum 2 years
  • Administration experience - minimum 2 years


  • Ability to connect & communicate with people at all levels and manage them accordingly
